The 2018 competition will be held in September 2018.
Location for Preliminary, Semifinal and Final Rounds:
Engelman Recital Hall at Baruch College, 55 Lexington Ave., New York, NY, USA

 

Four Rounds

The competition will consist of one qualification round and three separate live competition rounds: Preliminary, Semifinal, and Final.

Jury

The Jury for the NTD International Piano Competition will be composed of professional veteran pianists as well as piano educators, and they will be responsible for judging the contestants’ performances. The decisions of the panel for all rounds shall be final.

 

Judging Criteria

1. Faithful rendition of the original style of the musical form, the musical period, and the composer
2. Tone color
3. Technique
4. Presentation and execution with grace and nobility

 

Dress Code

1. Contestants must wear conservative formal performance attire during the competition. Improper attire may result in disqualification.
2. Recommended attire for men includes dark-colored suits or tuxedos; recommended attire for women is formal evening gown.

 

Awards

One Gold Award will receive US$10,000
One Silver Award will receive US$3,000
One Bronze Award will receive US$1,000

 

General Requirement

1. Semifinal and Final of the competition will be broadcast through live stream video on the Internet. The recording of the competition will be edited into a TV special to broadcast on NTD’s TV network.
2. Contestants are required to play from memory.
3. The panel retains the right to stop a performance.

 

Miscellaneous

1. By applying to the competition, contestants acknowledge the validity of the Rules and Regulations for the Competition.
2. Contestants must abide by the arrangements of the Competition’s Organization Committee. The Committee reserves the right to revoke the eligibilities and the prizes should a contestant be found in violation.
3. New Tang Dynasty Television is entitled to all copyrights of visual, text, audio, and video products made during the competition.
4. All awards must be accepted by the contestant in person at the award ceremony. Absence at the award ceremony constitutes forfeiture of the awards and prizes.
5. It is the contestant’s full responsibility to handle any unexpected situations during the duration of the competition.
6. The Competition’s Organization Committee shall have the ultimate authority to interpret the Rules and Regulations for the competition and have the right to make any changes to them as necessary.

 

Preliminary Round: Two pieces

1) Contestants need to play the first movement from one of the following sonatas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. No repeat is needed.
K.284 (D major)
K.309 (C major)
K.310 (A minor)
K.330 (C major)
K.333 (B-flat major)
K.457 (C minor)
K.533 (F major)
K.576 (D major)
2) Contestants need to play one Etude by Fryderyk Chopin

Semifinal Round: Two pieces

1) Commissioned piece (will be presented to qualified contestants 30 days before the live competition rounds in New York)
2) Contestants can choose to play either one of the following piano sonatas by Ludwig van Beethoven (All movements. No repeat is needed.)
Piano Sonata No.21 in C major, Op.53
Piano Sonata No.23 in F minor, Op.57
Piano Sonata No.30 in E major, Op.109
Piano Sonata No.31 in A-flat major, Op.110
Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op.111
Or one of the following 2 works:

Final Round: Two pieces

1) Contestants may select to play one of the following:
Bach-Busoni Chaconne in D minor
Schumann Symphonic Etudes Op.13
Chopin 12 Preludes op.28 # 1-12
Chopin 12 Preludes op.28 # 13-24
Liszt Mephisto Waltz #1, S 514
Rachmaninoff Etudes-Tableaux Op.33 (group by 3 or 4)
Rachmaninoff Etudes-Tableaux Op.39 (group by 3 or 4)
Combination of Rachmaninoff Etudes-Tableaux Op.33 and Op.39 (group by 3 or 4)
Franck Prelude, Chorale and Fugue op.21
2) An encore piece by applicant’s choice with maximal 10 minutes by a composer from the Baroque to the Romantic period.

Eligibility

1. All pianists age 16 to 48 with one of the following qualifications:

  • Concert artist

  • Professional performer

  • Piano educator

  • Current student or alumnae of a music institute

 

2. Qualification Round:

  • Contestants should send in audition video:
    The media type of the video should be viewable online video link, video file download link, or DVD that contains recording(s) of the applicant’s performance (either solo performance or collaboration with an orchestra/ensemble) or recording within twenty-four (24) months, the duration of which must exceed ten (10) minutes and less than thirty (30) minutes.
    Application Form C or its counterpart section in the online application must be submitted along with the audition video.
    For contestants from certain geographic areas, an additional live-audition round may be scheduled before the live competition rounds in New York. Details of live-audition round will be announced on the piano.ntdtv.com website at least one month prior to the live-audition date.

  • After the qualification round, the Organization Committee will mail invitations to all qualified contestants. The invitations will enable the contestant to apply for visas to USA and register on the day of the competition.

3. Applicants must provide the following application package:

  • Completed Application Form for the 2016 NTD International Piano Competition, which can be downloaded from the competition’s website. The signature of a legal guardian is required if applicant is under 18 years old.

  • taken within 12 months, preferably professional profile photo in electronic format.applicantA recent photo of

  •  A copy of a valid legal ID.

  • Audition video (details see Procedures and Competition Repertoire part of the regulation).

  • The above application materials should be received by the Competition’s Organization Committee by the application deadline. All application materials shall not be returned.


4. Application fee: A US$150* nonrefundable application fee shall apply. Accepted forms of payment are credit card, cashier’s check, traveler’s check, or money orders. Please make your check payable to New Tang Dynasty.
*Note: Applicants from several countries will have reduced application fee due to sponsorship.  Check FAQ section of this website for details.


5. Registered express mail charges: for applicants who need to apply for visa to compete in the live preliminary round in the United States, please indicate so on the Application Form. Upon applicant’s qualification to the live preliminary round, an additional US$50 fee is needed to process the shipping and handling of invitation letter and visa materials via USPS Priority Mail Express International.
